Crowns and Bridges
One of the main reasons why people lose teeth now is because of teeth with large restorations along with cracks and splits in the tooth. When appropriate, a tooth will last a lot longer and be a lot healthier for an individual if we cover it and keep it from having the chance to split. This can be done by placing a crown over a tooth. The crown can help protect the tooth from continued damage.
When teeth are missing, we often use a bridge in conjunction with crowns to replace the tooth from an aesthetic and cosmetic standpoint. This is an alternative to dental implants.
A crown is prepped and cemented over a chipped or broken tooth in order to hold everything together. A bridge is where there is a missing tooth in-between. In Dr. Sindelar's practice, if there is a missing tooth and the two adjacent teeth need to be crowned anyway, quite often those will be bridged and we will replace the tooth with a bridge instead of an implant. If the two adjacent teeth are in good shape and there is nothing wrong with them, we will typically consider a treatment plan that involves a dental implant with a crown instead.
Having crowns or bridges placed typically takes two dental appointments to complete, but after they are placed, a patient can function normally and go about their day. Care for crowns and bridges are the same as your natural teeth and with proper oral care, they should last indefinitely. However, it is always important to schedule and attend regular dental visits and check-ups to ensure your crowns and bridges are intact and functioning properly.
When considering cosmetic dentistry procedures such as crowns and bridges, it is important to talk to a qualified, trained professional to get a proper opinion.
