TMJ/ TMD
TMD/TMJ is temporomandibular joint dysfunction. It is precipitated for a number of reasons, primarily muscular tightness. It can also be due to a bite alignment problem, as well as joint problems such as arthritic joints or diseased joints. However, most of the cases are muscular, and can be treated with oral appliances.
Most individuals will know if they may possibly have TMJ/TMD if they are experiencing pain. Pain from this disorder is usually manifested in the form of migraines, headaches, facial pain, jaw and joint pain, as well as neck, shoulder and back pain. Another telltale sign may be the inability to open the jaw all the way.
There are a number of appliances that can be used that will eliminate most of the problems. In our offices, we use a particular appliance called an NTI, which has been cleared by the FDA to treat migraines. It is very efficient and effective in treating mild to moderate TMJ. In other situations such as those where bite alignment is needed, we can treat with restorative work.
Various treatment options are available to those who are experiencing this condition. Many individuals can find relief with oral appliances. Others may use physical therapy to treat the muscles around the jaw, and others who have more severe cases may find relief by going to a specialist and considering surgical options for treatment. This is typically a last resort, but may be necessary for more severe diseased joint problems.
